De første kristne læste Jesus ord fuldstændigt bogstaveligt. Kirkefaderen Origenes (ca. år 185-254) kastrerede sig selv efter at have læst Matthæus 19,12. Det fortæller Eusebius (ca. 260-341) i sin kirkehistorie:

Gik folk virkelig og Kastrerede sig selv på Jesus' tid?

Det var faktisk ikke spor unormalt på Jesus' tid.

Historikeren Josephus ´(år 39 - ca. 100) skrev 20 bind om jødefolkets historie. I dette værk, der altså blev skrevet nogenlunde samtidigt med Matthæusevangeliet, skrev Josephus:Those who have made themselves eunuchs shall be detested; avoid contact with those who renounce their manhood and the generative power God has given to men to increase their species. Josephus mener altså, at folk, der har gjort sig selv til eunukker, skal jages væk og afskys, som om de havde dræbt deres egne børn. Dette viser, at "eunuk" skal forstås fuldstændigt bogstaveligt. Josephus skriver, at de har frataget sig selv deres manddom, at de har dræbt deres (fremtidige) børn, at de er blevet feminine og monstrøse, og at Moseloven forbyder at gilde mennesker og dyr.

Det har åbenbart været så almindeligt på Jesus' tid at kastrere sig selv, at Josephus ikke bare nævner det, men bruger et afsnit på at fordømme det i stærke ord.

Josephus' skarpe ordvalg og hans henvisning til Moseloven viser, at det ikke drejede sig om en obskur "hedensk" sekt, men om centrale strømninger i jødedommen.

Men det skete ikke ikke kun blandt jøderne. Mange "hedenske" religioner krævede selvkastration af præsterne. Vi har et levn af det den dag i dag, hvor katolske præster, biskopper og paver formodes at leve i cølibat.

Many pagan priests castrated themselves so that they would not be stained by sex, but be pure and holy mediators between the people and the god or goddess. Cultic castration may be found, for example, in Babylon, in Lebanon, in Phoenicia, on Cyprus, in Syria, in the cult of Artemis in Ephesus, in the cult of Osiris in Egypt, and in the Phrygian cult of Attis and Cybele, which was widely disseminated in both East and West.

Under alle omstændigheder forbød Kejser Konstantin kastration i hele romerriget. Det var samme Kejser Konstantin, der gjorde kristendommen til statsreligion, og ved det første kirkemøde, koncilet i Nikæa år 325, blev selvkastration forbudt. Det var faktisk den allerførste "kanon" (= påbud), hvilket siger noget om, hvor udbredt fænomenet har været.

Påbuddet accepterer, at folk er blevet kastreret på grund af sygdom, eller af barbarer eller slaveejere. Men folk, der kastrerer sig selv, skal smides ud af kirken.

Hvordan kan man bedst bortforklare Jesus' Ord?

Det er ikke så fikst, at Jesus anbefaler noget, som kirken forbyder, og som vækker afsky i vores moderne samfund. Bibelselskabet har derfor valgt den prøvede løsning med at forfalske teksten: I oversættelsen fra 1992 er eunuk erstattet med "uegnet" og "dem".

"Uegnet" eller eunuk? Hvilken bibeloversættelse skal man tro på? Man behøver heldigvis ikke at være ekspert i oldgræsk for at kunne genkende ordet i den græske originaltekst:

Her fremgår det tydeligt, at Jesus siger "eunuk" ikke mindre end fem gange. Man får lyst til at citere Jesus fra 1948-oversættelsen igen: »Den, som kan fatte det, han fatte det«. Men Bibelselskabet vil åbenbart ikke fatte det.

The first Christians read the words of Jesus completely literally. The Church Father Origen (c. 185-254) castrated himself after reading Matthew 19:12. This tells Eusebius (c. 260-341) in his church history:

Did people really go and castrate themselves in Jesus' time?

In fact, there were no abnormal traces in Jesus' time.

The historian Josephus (year 39 - c. 100) wrote 20 volumes on the history of the Jewish people. In this work, which was thus written at approximately the same time as the Gospel of Matthew, Josephus wrote: Those who have made themselves eunuchs shall be detested; avoid contact with those who renounce their manhood and the generative power God has given to men to increase their species. Expel them as if they had killed their children, for they have lost what should produce them. Clearly their effeminate soul has caused them to maim their body too. Treat similarly all that is of monstrous appearance, and let it be unlawful to money men or any other animals.

Thus, Josephus believes that people who have made themselves eunuchs must be chased away and despised as if they had killed their own children. This shows that "eunuch" must be understood quite literally. Josephus writes that they have deprived themselves of their manhood, that they have killed their (future) children, that they have become feminine and monstrous, and that the Mosaic Law forbids gilding humans and animals.

Apparently, it has been so common in Jesus' time to castrate himself that Josephus does not just mention it, but uses a paragraph to condemn it in strong words.

Josephus' sharp choice of words and his reference to the Mosaic Law show that it was not about an obscure "pagan" sect, but about central currents in Judaism.

But it didn't just happen among the Jews. Many "pagan" religions demanded the self-castration of the priests. We have a leftover to this day, where Catholic priests, bishops and popes are supposed to be living in celibacy.

Here is a quote from the book Eunuchs for the Kingdom of Heaven:

Let us not forget that the first 144,000 people who come to Heaven are male virgins who have not "messed with women":

In any case, Emperor Constantine forbade castration throughout the Roman Empire. It was the same Emperor Constantine who made Christianity a state religion, and at the first church meeting, the Council of Nicaea 325, self-rejection was forbidden. In fact, it was the very first "canon" (= injunction), which says something about how widespread the phenomenon has been.

The injunction accepts that people have been castrated because of illness, or by barbarians or slave owners. But people who castrate themselves must be thrown out of the church.

How can you best explain Jesus' Word?

It is not so certain that Jesus recommends something that the Church forbids and which disgusts in our modern society. The Bible Society has therefore chosen the tried-and-true solution of falsifying the text: In the 1992 translation, eunuch was replaced by "unfit" and "them".

Matthew 19:12There are those who are unfit for marriageescaped from the life of the mother, and there are those who are unfit because people have made them unfit for it, and there are those who have made themselves unfit for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven. Let those who can accommodate it! "(Authorized translation from 1992)

"Unsuitable" or eunuch? What Bible Translation Should You Believe in? Fortunately, you do not need to be an expert in Ancient Greek in order to recognize the word in the Greek original text:

Here it is clear that Jesus says "eunuch" no less than five times. You want to quote Jesus from the 1948 translation again: "He who can understand, he understands." But the Bible Society obviously won't understand it.

Conclusion: Never read the Bible with sharp scissors in your hand. Origen's allegedly later regretted his act.Incidentally, Christian men should NOT be thrown away, one does not become more pure for that reason, the purity is Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit inside the heart which is the mind from which all life springs. Blessed are the pure of heart / mind they must see God. But when we meet Christian men who have done this, we must love them on an equal footing with everyone else.
